How BOTOX® Cosmetic Works
Botulinum toxin is a purified protein which can be administered by a professional to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. The treatment mostly works on wrinkles of dynamic nature, which are caused by excessive facial movement.
When BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected, it temporarily reduces the movement of certain muscles in your face by blocking the nerve signals. As the muscles are no longer able to contract, they relax and cannot create wrinkles. Your skin should smooth out during this time, reducing existing wrinkles and preventing future ones from appearing.
The botulinum toxin will be evenly spread using multiple injections in the target muscles. Aside from wrinkles, BOTOX® Cosmetic can also be used to treat many other conditions such as migraines, headaches, or muscle twitching. The effect is temporary, lasting for about three to four months at most.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a minimally invasive procedure, meaning that recovery time is often quick and with a low potential for downtime. The treatment lasts 10 to 15 minutes, making BOTOX® Cosmetic a perfect lunchtime treatment.
Discomfort is fairly mild, as you may only feel some stings. Similar to any other injection, you may expect to see redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection site. Some patients may also experience headaches or temporary irritation. Most of these side effects are mild and should improve within two to three days.
After the treatment, the area may be washed as normal and makeup may be applied as desired. Refrain from lying down for the next three to four hours and try to sit upright as much as possible. In the first 24 hours, you should also avoid physical activity.
BOTOX® Cosmetic results may differ from one patient to another. Most women and men see the first effects around three days after the treatment, as the skin will begin to look smoother. Final results should be visible within two weeks after the treatment, once the BOTOX® Cosmetic has finally settled.
The muscles will recover their functions gradually, with the effect of BOTOX® Cosmetic lasting for about three to four months. This may depend on how often you get BOTOX® Cosmetic, as repeat users may notice longer-lasting effects.
After the third month, you can contact Renaissance MD for a maintenance treatment. This will prevent the wrinkles from appearing once again due to the restoration of muscle movement.
