Dysport is a really popular alternative to Botox and has been around since 2009. Like Botox, Dysport is commonly used to both prevent and minimize the appearance of wrinkles on the forehead, glabella (“11 lines” between the brows), and crow’s feet (lines at the outer corners of the eyes). It can also be used to treat a gummy smile, create a “lip flip,” smooth out chin dimpling, and relax neck bands or neck lines.

Dysport is a local muscle relaxant (or neuromuscular blocking agent) adapted from the botulinum neuromodulator type-A and is used in both aesthetic and therapeutic indications.

WHAT IS DYSPORT?
Dysport is an injectable that paralyzes certain muscles in the forehead so they can't move, thus preventing wrinkles from forming. It can also soften existing lines over time. Dysport is FDA-approved to treat moderate to severe glabellar lines between the eyebrows, known as frown lines.

Dynamic wrinkles form from dynamic movements of the face over time. Aging causes the body to decrease collagen and elastin production, which leads to a weakening of the skin’s structure. Dynamic movements continue, but the skin cannot respond the same way, and, thus, dynamic wrinkles form.

Before you begin treatment, you will undergo an initial consultation at our office to confirm that you are a candidate for this injectable. We will discuss your medical and health history review any medications and supplements you may be taking, and discuss any experience you have had with neurotoxins.
HOW DOES DYSPORT WORK?
Once your injector administers this injectable into your muscles, it begins working immediately, though visible results will take a few days. It works by preventing your nerve signals from communicating with your facial muscles.

After treatment, the dynamic muscles that caused your frown lines or crow’s feet can no longer flex or contract, and as a result, the skin can rest from repetitive expressive movements. The result is smooth, wrinkle-free skin that lasts for several months.

The first step is to call us to arrange a consultation. You’ll meet with Dr. Hyder or one of our RN's to examine your face and discuss your treatment options. The treatment itself is not unduly painful or uncomfortable. A very thin, fine needle is used, so while it’s normal to feel a pinch or slight pressure, most patients don’t describe the injections as painful.

When Dysport gets injected into the skin, it prevents the release of acetylcholine. When this happens, the muscle won’t receive the message to contract. As the muscle can no longer move, this causes the wrinkles to soften and helps to stop new wrinkles from forming.

The injection site may be red, raised, sore, and/or itchy for a few hours. You must not rub the area for 24 hours so that everything can settle. Don’t lie down or bend over for 4 hours. You can get back to normal activities right away.

Eventually, the muscles in your face will become too weak to make wrinkle-causing expressions too harshly (such as frowning and squinting).You may notice the results from your Botox injections within a few days, but the full effect can take more than two weeks to be seen.

This effect is temporary. After 3-4 months, the muscles can fully contract the skin again. Therefore, re-treatments are necessary to maintain the effect.
Dysport is a botulinum toxin injection that blocks nerve signals to the muscles within a targeted area. Dysport has been used in Europe since 1990 and finally received FDA approval for use in the United States in 2009.
